Brookmont is located on the corner of Curtis Road an the Northern Expressway in Andrews Farm.
Originally Curtis Road was a major east-to-west connector road that had been constructed in the 1970’s and over time has been continuously developed and upgraded as the northern suburbs have increasingly expanded over the last 25 years.
The Northern Expressway was a $565 million Federal and State Government nation building infrastructure project and claims to be the largest Government project delivered in South Australia within the last 65 years. The Northern Expressway commenced its construction between September 2008 and September 2010 and is now a 23 kilometre controlled access road from Gawler to Port Wakefield Road.
The Northern Expressway has been built into a four-lane standard road, providing a faster route between Adelaide and Gawler and allowing freight vehicles to avoid residential areas by going straight to Port Wakefield Road and onto the Port River Expressway, increasing traffic flow. It has provided significant economic benefits to improve traffic conditions for local residents as well as making roads safer by reducing freight traffic.
In early 2008, the State Government announced plans for another major Northern Connector; an eight-lane connector road linking the Northern Expressway, South Road Superway and Port River Expressway. According to the Government, the current roadway will not be able to handle the projected number of vehicles that will need to use the road or cater for the size of freight carriers wanting to travel through, thus creating the Northern Connector project.
The Northern Connecter project begun its construction in 2016 and is expected to be completed in December 2019, compromising $985 million of Australia’s Federal and State Government investment. The project involves the construction of a 15.5 kilometre six–lane motorway which will provide a vital commuter and freight link from the North to the South, as well as across to Port Adelaide.
The major road infrastructure between the new Northern Connector and the established expressways now provide a safe and efficient transport route for employment, recreation or leisurely activities. The new motorway will support regional growth within the north and economic sustainability, more efficient road travel, improved safety and environmentally sustainable outcomes.
